The quick answer

Spring (March to May)
March is still cold, with highs around 50°F. The Prague Castle gardens (the Royal Garden, the South Gardens and the Stag Moat) reopen in March after being closed all winter. April is when the city wakes up. Days reach the low 60s, the castle switches to its longer summer hours on April 1, and the big summer crowds haven't arrived yet. May is close to perfect, with highs around 70°F and over 200 hours of sunshine in the month.
Classical music fans should plan around the Prague Spring International Music Festival. It's held every year from mid-May into early June, and in 2026 it ran from May 12 to June 4. Book hotels early for those weeks.
Summer (June to August)
Summer has the longest days and the warmest evenings, which is great for river cruises, beer gardens and late dinners outside. The trade-off is crowds. Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square are packed from late morning on, and hotel prices hit their peak. Summer is also when most of the year's rain falls, usually as short thunderstorms. If summer is your only option, see the big sights before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. The Prague Castle grounds are open from 6:00 to 22:00, so you can walk the courtyards when they're quiet.
Autumn (September to November)
September feels like summer without the crowds. Highs are about 69°F and it's one of the driest months. October is cooler (about 58°F) and the trees on Petřín Hill and along the river turn golden. It's our favorite month for a relaxed city trip. Note that Prague Castle's historical buildings switch to shorter winter hours on November 1 (9:00–16:00 instead of 9:00–17:00). November is grey and quiet until the holiday markets open at the end of the month.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is cold, with highs around 39–42°F, and it's the darkest time of year. December averages only about 46 hours of sunshine. Snow does happen, but it usually doesn't stay long in the city center.
December is busy anyway because of the holiday markets. The Old Town Square market (officially the Christmas Market) runs from November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00, and there's another market on Wenceslas Square. Expect mulled wine, trdelník pastries and crowds in the evening. January and February are the quietest and best-value months of the year. They're a good choice if you mostly want museums, concerts, opera and long dinners.
Crowds and prices: what to expect
Prague is busiest from May to September, and again over the December holidays and New Year. The quietest stretch is January to March. Hotel rates follow the crowds, so a luxury room in late October or March can cost far less than the same room in July. For the best rooms and river views in May, June, September or December, book three to six months ahead.
Before you go: entry rules for US travelers
- Czechia is in the Schengen area. US citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- The EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES) started on October 12, 2025. It records your entry digitally at the border instead of stamping your passport, so allow a little extra time at your first Schengen airport.
- ETIAS, the EU's upcoming online travel authorization, has not started yet. The EU says it will announce the start date several months in advance.
Our pick
For a first trip, go in mid-May or mid-September and stay at least four nights. That's enough time for the castle, the Old Town, a river cruise and a day trip to Český Krumlov. Want a day-by-day plan? See our Prague in 4 days luxury itinerary.
