Honeymoon planning checklist and timeline

The best honeymoons are booked early and planned lightly. Lock in the big pieces in the right order, then leave room to rest. Here's the timeline we use with couples, from a year out to the day you fly.

Beach and overwater villas on a turquoise lagoon in the Maldives

12 to 9 months before: dream, decide, budget

  • Agree on the feel of the trip. Beach and do nothing? City and food? Adventure? A mix, like a few days in Europe and then a beach? Each of you picks your top two must-haves.
  • Set a total budget that includes flights, hotels, transfers, activities, meals and tips, not just the hotel.
  • Check the weather for your dates. If you're looking at the Caribbean, remember the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. December to April is the most reliable stretch there.
  • Decide how long you can take off. For long-haul places like the Maldives or Southeast Asia, aim for at least 10 nights so the travel time is worth it.

9 to 6 months before: book the big pieces

  • Book flights. Many large US airlines open bookings about 331 days ahead. Premium cabins and award seats for popular dates go first.
  • Book the hotel or resort. The best rooms, like overwater villas, ocean-view suites and adults-only sections, sell out early for peak dates. Ask about honeymoon offers when you book, and keep proof of your wedding date in case they ask for it.
  • Buy travel insurance soon after your first big payment, so cancellation coverage starts early.
  • Check your passports. Many countries require your passport to be valid for six months beyond your travel dates. For the Schengen area in Europe, US citizens can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

Name change? Read this before booking

Book your flights in the exact name that's on the ID or passport you'll travel with, because airlines match tickets to your ID. If you plan to change your name after the wedding, the simplest approach is to travel on your current passport and current name, and change it after the honeymoon. If you'd rather update your passport first, leave plenty of time: as of October 2026, the State Department lists routine processing at 4–6 weeks and expedited at 2–3 weeks (with a $60 expedite fee), and mailing time comes on top of that.

6 to 3 months before: shape the days

  • Plan the rough rhythm of each day, such as one planned activity a day with the rest free. Couples who over-plan their honeymoon usually wish they hadn't.
  • Book the special moments: a private dinner, a sunset cruise, a spa day for two, a tasting menu at a restaurant you'd never normally book.
  • Arrange private transfers. After a long flight, a driver with your name on a sign is worth every cent.
  • Check entry rules for every country on your route, including transit stops. Europe's digital Entry/Exit System has been running since October 12, 2025. ETIAS, its online travel authorization, has not started yet.

2 months before: details and paperwork

  • Make sure you each have a REAL ID or passport for domestic flights. TSA has required one since May 7, 2025.
  • Check whether you need any vaccinations or medications for your destination, and ask your doctor.
  • Tell your bank and card companies about your trip, and check which card has no foreign transaction fees.
  • Look up phone plans or an eSIM for your destination.
  • Book a hotel near the airport for the wedding night if you're flying out early the next morning.

1 month before: confirm everything

  • Get all confirmations in one place, offline: flights, hotels, transfers, activities and insurance.
  • Choose seats and add any special meal requests to your flights.
  • Tell the hotel you're on your honeymoon (again), along with your arrival time and any dietary needs.
  • Make copies of your passports and keep them apart from the originals.

The week before

  • Check in online as soon as check-in opens.
  • Pack your carry-on as if your checked bag will be late: a change of clothes, swimwear, medications and chargers.
  • Bring a universal plug adapter if you're leaving the US.
  • Hand off anything wedding-related (returns, thank-yous) to someone you trust, so you can switch off.

Honeymoon packing checklist

  • Passports, IDs, insurance details and printed confirmations
  • Credit cards (two, kept in separate places) and a little local cash
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • One dressy outfit each for special dinners
  • Comfortable walking shoes for city days
  • Medications in their original packaging
  • A portable charger and plug adapter

Ideas to start with

Couples who want a mix often do a few days in a European city followed by a beach. Prague in late spring or early autumn is one of our favorite city starts (see the best time to visit Prague guide). Couples who just want sun can compare a cruise with an adults-only resort in our cruise vs. all-inclusive guide.
